What is one lesson that changed you for the better?

I was talking to my Uncle and he was telling me about a workshop he participated in at his church. At one point during the workshop, he said “If I’ve been doing it wrong for 40 years, and you’ve been doing it right for 20 years, I want to learn from you”. There was a moment of silence in the room before the facilitator spoke, “That’s an uncommon perspective, most people aren’t that humble”*.

The Bible teaches many lessons on humility, especially toward God. James 4:10 says , “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” Luke 14:11 carries a similar message: “For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Lessons Learned

Some of the best lessons I have learned were when I was teaching someone else. They taught me a lesson I would not otherwise have learned. There are many people younger than me that have wisdom I don’t. Don’t get the impression I don’t want to learn from people older than me, I do. I think we can learn the most if we learn from the young as well as the old.

In the past few weeks, I’ve had conversations with men a generation or two older than me who have shared some of the wisdom they have learned. Two of them have learned much as they face the very real possibility of death. There’s an urgency, intensity, and purpose in their words and actions that I don’t commonly see. It’s incredible to see what believers do when they know they might meet their Savior at any moment.

I was talking with one of those men and he said something that really stuck with me. He spoke with emotion and conviction as he said, “I need, to know, my Savior“. His suffering had made Him desperate to know God in a way He hadn’t before.

Questions to Ponder

Do you learn from people younger than you?

Do you learn from people older than you?

What is one lesson that changed you for the better?
