I keep sitting down to do video production and not doing it and not knowing why I don’t. I felt like Paul in Romans 7:15:
“For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do.”
My sin nature plays role, my health issues play a role, but I also wanted to take a look at what has helped me in the past and this is what I came up with.
Read the Bible & Pray
Nothing puts me in a better mindset then reading the Bible and praying. In God’s word, I find the proper perspective that I should have on my life. In prayer, I give God my anxieties and inadequacies. The result is peace and a commitment to do what is right.
Start really small.
James Clear created his own “2-minute rule”: Do a habit for 2 minutes. Commit and execute, but you only have to do it for 2 minutes. He says consistency matters more than quantity when we’re starting a new habit.
Chris Do talks about “Just to the ___” goals. Just to that street sign, just 5 minutes, just to take one more step. And when you keep taking a single step, you’ll look up after some time and see the miles you have traveled.
I started with playing anything or learning anything each day on the piano. Just showing up every day. I ended up averaging between 15 to 20 minutes a day, which gave me a 100 hours of practice over the course of a year.
Take a Break From Self-improvement
Put down the books, stop watching the videos and reading other resources. I don’t know about you, but I was ingesting more advice in a day than I could implement in a month. It was a hobby that became a bad habit. I needed a break.
If you are struggling with this or have overcome it, I would love to hear how it went and what you learned. I still struggle with this.
