Which rocks do you put in first?

Picture this: You have a mix of big and small rocks you’re trying to put in a jar.  Which ones do you put in first?

If you put the small rocks in first, the big ones won’t fit. If you put the big rocks in first, the small rocks fit neatly into the cracks. This is an old illustration for how we should structure our lives. We should put our “Big Rocks”, our key commitments to God, family, work, etc. into our lives first. Then the less important tasks can fill in the cracks.

We all know this to some degree or another, but how often do we do it? I find myself getting lost in the “details” of small tasks that make life run or distract me while not spending enough time on the “Big Rocks”. Going forward I’m going to schedule my key commitments and keep a list of less important tasks for me to complete when I can. I won’t be perfect, but I’m striving to be better in God’s strength.

A Question for You

What “Big Rocks” do you want to have in your life?

  1. I like that idea of a firm schedule for the big things and a flexible list of the small ones. I had heard this basic concept many years before, but your plan is a great extension of it…
