One Verse
About a week ago, I chose a Tiny Habit. I chose to read one verse from the Bible every day after I do my health routine when I wake up. I usually read more than one verse, but any more than that is extra credit.
No matter how crazy my day is, I can always read one verse. There was one day last week where I slept through my alarm and woke up 2 hours later than I was intending. The day was crazy, but I could still read one verse.
I read one verse, and pray to ask God to help me grow to understand and apply it. Then I try to take one truth with me as I go about my day. Just one.
One Thing at A Time
Before I started doing this, I would read a chapter a day most days and nothing on one or two days a week. I would often be like the man in James who comes to the word, goes away, and forgets. James says he is like the man who sees himself in the mirror, goes away, and forgets what he looked like.
It is still good to study and read longer passages of scripture, but the “one verse concept” has been very good for the day-to-day of my relationship with God. It takes advantage of the fact you can only focus on one thing at a time.
Promises and Certainties
I am exploring some promises of God in my daily verse study.
There is something special about taking a promise and meditating on it for a day. Not just any promise, but a promise from almighty God who cannot lie, who cannot fail, and will always complete what he has purposed. To paraphrase Spurgeon and Piper: How I love the “I wills” and “I shalls” of God. Here’s a few certainties:
He cares for you (1 Pt. 5:7)
He called you (Eph. 2:1)
He will throughly equip you by His word (2 Tim. 3:16-17)
He will transform you as you behold Him (2 Cor. 3:18)
He will renew your inner man even as your body suffers many pains (2 Cor. 4:16-18)
He loved you when you were unlovable (Rom. 5:8)
He loves you even when feel unlovable (Rom. 5:8)
Your body may perish, your friends forsake you, but He remains.
Josh
