I wrote this poem for the parents of a stillborn child some time ago.
They more recently gave me permission to share it publicly in the hopes it might be a comfort to others who have lost little ones.
Baby Girl
by Josh Mudge
Baby girl who died far too young
Unborn daughter who never saw the sun
Baby girl who died too young
Baby girl whose life had just begun
Unborn daughter whose lifeless eyes
See no more
Baby girl who rested
In her mother’s arms
Baby girl gone far too young
Baby girl whose life had just begun
Baby girl
We’ll see you once again
Unborn daughter
Precious one
You see what we long to see
A life greater and more joyous
Than we have ever known
We grieve a life lost
Far too young
A life only just begun
Let us see what we cannot see
Let us look with spiritual eyes
To the glory and grace
You bring
In the life
And death
Of one so young
Let us see and know and believe your Word
Let us see and savor our Savior
Let us know and see and savor Your truth
Let us look to a life beyond
This little one is with us no more
This little one will never see this world
This little one is new again
In Your life beyond
This world
Unborn daughter
You have left this life of pain
To a land of glory and of grace
This precious daughter is Yours forever.
We will never meet her here
But we will see her there
In a life beyond
This world of pain
Let us see
Let us know
These truths
Let them comfort and fortify
For the days ahead
I pray for the father
And the mother
Of one gone far too young
Give them grace
And purpose
Let them know wisdom and joy
Even
As they remember
Holding one
Far too young
Let them see
Let them savor
Let them know
And believe
That the life of one
Far too young
Is born anew
In a life beyond
Precious one
Far too young
For now, we say goodbye
For a breath
For a moment
Till we meet you with Him on high
Goodbye
Goodbye
For a breath
For a moment
Till we fly
And see you there
With our King
And Treasure

Hope in the face of tragedy.
Indeed.
